The New African American Man
tells the story of what it’s like to be a black man in this
country. The book delves into the thoughts and experiences of a young
black boy, who is taught to think of blackness as a condition associated
with being a victim. And from these victim beliefs, you live with
anger, self-hatred, addiction, depression, illiteracy, and numerous
other deleterious beliefs.
While the central theme of book focuses on empowerment, this is
not your typical discussion of empowerment. It’s a transformative,
cultural type of empowerment. The chapters on fear and worry truly
hit home. Wow! I felt the words jump from the pages right into my
soul. And the suggestions at the end of each chapter are special
treats for inquiring minds.
I think what sets this book apart from most of the other books
I have read on empowerment is the straightforward approach used
to go deep into the bowels of the African-American lifestyle. Fortunately,
it doesn’t end with the problems of victimization, because
you get the additional information on how to overcome problems that
cause people to think of themselves as victims.
This is a worthwhile book that deserves to be read by anyone who
wants to know how it feels growing up black in the United States.
This book is recommended for high school students, college students,
and adults.
